I am a non smoker dislike smelling smoke.
But I refuse to be a Smoker Nazi.
The governments fucked the people by making Smoking cool and now they turn 100% in the other direction it is now evil and smoking should not be allowed anywhere.
Pubs suffer and smokers have to smoke outside like nonces.
Do not get me wrong I hated smoke in my face at resteraunts etc but their should at least be a compromise for smokers.

Spurious figures definitely, and the source was based on studies they commissioned, so the convenient net cost to society is to be ignored...

If you have a problem with someone else smoking you are part of this modern selfish way of life where you take offense to everything, think the world owes you a living, and want other people to behave and think like you do.

I don't smoke regularly and am a bit too old to smoke more than occasionally but I like to grab a pack when I am on holiday or go out boozing.

Like having a fag in the bogs at half time at Upton Park as well its an important part of the match for me.

I know you still get school kids smoking but this generation do not see tobacco advertising. They shops have those blinds they pull across the fags. Alot of adults have quit now so many kids parents don't smoke.

I know about 15 people that quit last year alone who were heavy smokers. I can honestly see smoking dwindling over the next 30 years and would not be suprised that by, say, 2030 smoking is almost a dying art.

You should be banned from going out in public.

I've noticed a lot of people gathering around the WATER COOLER having cosy little chats.

Costing billions a year, that time. Plus, water makes you piss when you drink it, so that's more time lost.

Ban water.

The UK workforce is literally pissing billions away each year too.

BAN URINATION!

So basically, when they realised the giant shortfall, they made up a load of other stuff to marry up the figures....time spent on fag breaks? Absolutely essential that caffeine is banned then.

Should ban spirits and shooters. Anything over 20% proof.

Does more harm, costs more and raises less revenue.

According to ASH, so perhaps a bit biased... the 'Social cost' of smoking annually, ie more than just NHS but costs related to it being the biggest cause of domestic fires, economic effects of time spent on fag breaks as well as illness related absence, is £12.9bn a year. The £18.7bn figure for 2013 resulted in £12bn in revenue for that year ...

Re: Time to ban Smoking?
A8,

We are where we are as a society. There is no banning of smoking now or for an extremely long time. Criminalising what has been a long accepted social behaviour isn't the way forward at all, although in an ideal world cigarettes would never have been legal and I fully support the smoking in public ban. My mrs smokes and she doesn't do it in the house - many guests are quite shocked she and they have to go outside for a fag, but she's happy to and so they have to be too (I'm an ex-smoker FWIW).

But then what about alcohol? At least smokers are generally only killing themselves (apart from Roy Castle!), whereas many more people are killed or injured requiring NHS treatment by the use BY OTHERS of alcohol.
